Italy: Tuscany: Siena

Florence is the capital of the Tuscany region.  Siena is a popular tourist destination that has not been turned into a tourist trap as of yet.  In the center is the Piazza del Campo.  It is a quiet, open space that is much needed in this crowded town with its narrow, medieval streets.  The Siena Cathedral is built with alternating black and while marble columns, inside and out.  This is the most striking feature, which adds to the quiet beauty of this church.  Twice a year, the Palio occurs around the Piazza.  Horses races madly around once, the riders bareback.  It is a dangerous activity for both riders and audience.  Siena also have fabulous restaruants and cafes, which are a pleasure crusie in itself.
