This is the birthplace of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals. The Basilica of St. Francis is an apt tribute to its namesake. Although it is huge, the artwork and architecture are simple and classic. Frescoes by Giotto about the life of St. Francis are the best reflection of the life of St. Francis. Although there are souvenir shops along the street, this town does not feel too touristy, but more respectful, as I supposed people are there to appreciate the saint. I was so impressed I bought two tiles to hang with prayers written by Francis.
