Piazza della Repubblica is the site of the old forum during the Roman Empire.  The La Rinascente is a fancy and overpriced department store, but has a delicious cafe on the roof with breathtaking views of the city.

The Uffizi Gallery is a smorgasbord of Italian masterpieces.  The courtyard is surrounded by colossal statues of famous Florentines watching you.
